About A.R.E.

Alaska “The Last Frontier”, has the fastest-growing percentage of older adults in the nation and many are members of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. A.R.E. (formerly SAGE Alaska*) recognizes evidence that there is a hunger for education and training on the part of service providers, educators, and policymakers.

A.R.E. provides a variety of services and programs for older LGBTQIA2S+ adults throughout the state. The vast geographical space of Alaska requires innovative electronic communication through

internet and telecommunications to reach many in our community and to increase a LGBTQIA2S+ culturally competent and inclusive eldercare workforce statewide. Our partnership with the Alaska State Office of AARP expands A.R.E.’s outreach efforts to our unique combination of remote villages, boroughs and cities. Headquartered in Anchorage, ARE members meet socially weekly and assist each other through a variety of activities.

* Alaska Rainbow Elders (A.R.E.) formerly SAGE Alaska began in 2016. SAGE Alaska was rebranded as A.R.E. on January 1, 2023 and remains partnered with the national organization, SAGE.
