Response to Alaska State Medical Board

Today, Identity shared a powerful letter from our board co-chair, Chandra Poe, in response to the Alaska State Medical Board’s recent actions targeting gender-affirming care for youth.

In her letter, Chandra thanks the 700 licensed medical providers in Alaska who stood with families and defended evidence-based, lifesaving care:

“Thank you for standing up for not only the integrity of your profession but also the right to privacy and autonomy, the rights of parents to make informed decisions about evidence-based, life-saving care for their children.”

Chandra also spoke directly to families of transgender, non-binary, and gender-fluid young people:

“We see you, and you are not alone. To the parents and caregivers supporting their trans youth – thank you for your strength and resilience. Thank you for wanting the best for your kids, and for working toward allowing them to grow up safe, healthy, and supported.”

The letter highlights the dangerous precedent set by the Medical Board’s actions and reaffirms that trans and LGBTQIA2S+ people have always been—and always will be—worthy of equal access to healthcare and wellness.

“Identity will continue to stand in solidarity with our LGBTQIA2S+ families and community. Thank you to all who see that healthcare decisions should be made by families and their own providers, not impeded by politically motivated, personal philosophy of a few individuals in positions of power.”

We are grateful to Chandra for her leadership and to all families, providers, and allies standing together at this critical moment.
